The Empowered Patient Coalition is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization working to inform and empower patients, advocates, and caregivers to prevent medical harm and improve patient safety. Please see our website at www.EmpoweredPatientCoalition.org for more information about us and our work.
The coalition knows first-hand that the crucial first step in patient engagement is information and education. Patients will be able to function as members of the health care team and prevent medical harm once they have a foundation of facts, strategies, and basic skills.
The coalition works on several projects to support this goal:
A reporting survey to capture medical events from the patient's point of view. We listen to and encourage the collective voice of patients and aggregate data is made public – a unique feature that sets our survey apart from others.
Patient safety publications including a Hospital Guide for Patients and Families, fact sheets, checklists, and a book: The Empowered Patient: Hundreds of life-saving facts, actions steps, and strategies you need to know.
"Ten Things Patients Should Know" fact sheets. Brief, simple bullet-point fact sheets that support shared decision making and patient empowerment efforts. The fact sheets assist patients in asking the right questions at the right time.
A personalized patient safety video that is easy to make and free for patients and families. Our volunteers will assist you in creating a video that honors you or a loved one and that can be shared with others via email or social media outlets. The video helps prevent medical errors and keeps those you care about safe and informed.
An advocate directory to help you find individuals and organizations that you can turn to for help, information, and support. You can search the advocate directory using key words or by state listings.
